Foreign Anthologies (Germany)

Post by Bob Rothwell »

During my wanderings around the ether (and we don't want to dwell on that for too long :-$) and away from these shores, I came across a fascinating (to me, anyway) German collection of Ghost Story Anthologies from around the world. I liked the look and idea of them so much that I would love to find out more about them and, in particular, if they or anything similar have been published in the English language. So, if anyone has, or can get, knowledge, pictures etc. please, please share!

Here goes for some English editions:

Ghost Stories From London edited by Jacquelyn Visick was published over here as London Tales Of Terror (Fontana in 1972)

Contents & cover

Ghost Stories From Wales edited by R. Chetwynd-Hayes was published over here as Welsh Tales Of Terror by Fontana in 1972

Contents & cover

Scottish Ghost Stories edited by Peter Haining looks like it's probably Clans Of Darkness (Gollancz, 1971: Sphere, 1972)

Contents & cover

Hauntings. An Anthology is Haining's The Evil People (Leslie Frewin, 1968, Everest, 1975)

Contents & covers

Hour Of The Vampire is Haining's The Midnight People(Leslie Frewin, 1968)

Contents & covers

Monsters. An Anthology looks to me as though it's Haining's The Freak Show

Contents & cover

The Lady Cynthia Asquith one is The Second Ghost Book, (James Barrie, 1952: Pan, 1956)

I'll get a cover scan of the Pan paperback if you want?

gloomysundae, many thanks for all this. I've now amended the posting to include your info (complete with your links, of course!). Thanks also for sending me the covers for the Asquith title.

I also notice from your excellent site that Fontana did a series of Terror titles, but only got outside the UK with 'European' and 'Orient' Terror (ignoring the 'Seas' and 'Outer Space' titles!). Now that the UK is full of other cultures, perhaps a publisher might want to attempt a similar series here?

I love the Fontana series, and the 'European' and 'Oriental' collections both have a strong claim to being the best of the bunch - J. J. Strating's selections are virtually all instant classics.

I'm with you: I'd love to see an enterprising publisher produce the equivalent of these 200 page paperbacks today with something like the same regularity. A nice mixture of the old and new (like the later Fontana Ghost Story books), individual volumes devoted to various authors from all corners of the globe ...

But .... "short stories don't sell"
