Phony Membership
Phony Membership
The member ship list seems to be packed with individuals pushing their usualy indecent websites. I went to one so called members site and it was packed with viruses. (As probably were the persons photographed)
I know Bob used to delete these 'members' and it might be worth cleaning up the list so only genuine DW fans are included. Not too much work I hope.

Surely a Pimms would be more appropriate for a man of your stature and taste! Then Duck a la Montmorency followed by...... Hang on a minute how did we end up here! I think I'm off to lunch-Fish and Chips will do if I can find my canoe and paddle to negotiate the flooded high street.
All the best to you.

Spammer Horror, etc. Have A Purge
The people you might seriously consider deleting are those who've joined since the board went back online, have never posted and use what look like random strings of letters for their names - especially if they list a website. I tried two at random just now: one's for xanox the other .... well, I won't be checking out any more of them if you get my meaning.
None of these people will EVER post, but they will have access to the membership list while they're here and that's all they're interested in: collecting email addresses for spam-bots.
It seems to me there's only one way to go on this after all the hard work you've put into restoring the board.

Hope it helps
I hope Charles (and the IT man) find this link as useful as I did:
United Forums
Essentially, it's UF members compiling a list of known spam-spreading email providers. I recognised a lot from there who've targeted our board in the past and I'm certain there will be plenty who've hit the library. Its a dull job but if you check the last part of the email addresses of the non-posters against the list you can clear them off. From my experience @mail.ru, @cashette.com, @gawab.com and @de are the most persistent but it may not be the same with you.

I'd never checked the memberlist before today. I was surprised to see over 500 members, and it seems we get four or five a day. Then I ran my cursor down the list of web connections--at least one a day cited "pornos.com" as the member's website. So the sooner these phonies can be rooted out, the better.
I don't know what's to prevent them from coming right back, though...

Well, as we're in the Library, I can't possibly utter my usual words to describe such people, but I will say that they're thoroughly bad sorts - rotten eggs - and absolute bounders. The worst type of cads.
I suppose if one made the registration process too lengthy, it might discourage new members , but would it be worth it to stop such dispicable behaviour? Might be a lot of extra work for Charles (as if he didn't have enough already), but could be worth it in the long run.

Checked the membership myself today.
Like all you old, sorry I mean longer term, members I feel it is amazing how many people have joined since the site went back on line.
The site has increased tenfold since I joined last November, if only they were all genuine fans then it would be a really good convention.
I hope their membership is not putting other genuine fans off joining

I hope so too. The trouble is - as I have found in discussing this with my I.T. chaps - that it is very hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys, and if you take the bad guys off they just keep coming back.
That said, ideas welcome.
Re the convention, I am replying to all those who have / are expressing an interest directly, and will try to work out possible numbers in a week or so. If anyone got their message bounced back, we have identified the reason so please try again.
All the best to all of you ...
