What about the forum?

Post by Garry Holmes » Sat 30 Jun, 2007 23:45:51

I don't want to come across as preachy or hectoring, but is anyone else worrying about the fact that this forum is more or less inactive? Before Bob's sad death this forum had book reviews, arguments, political diatribes, the whole works. Unfortunately, since the site returned, it's as though the heart has gone out of the group. I know that I can't really complain about this, since I haven't written anything here either, but it would be a shame if the whole forum simply fizzled out. It would really be nice if the rest of you could contribute to this thread and tell me what you think.

I feel excactly the same. It all seems to have stopped and that's a pity. I never met Bob but I feel that we should keep the BB going as he would have wanted. I think we should try and make one post a week on a different DW related subject. I also think there is an argument for some sort of meeting or get together of DW fans. Maybe one day in a hotel where we could have a guest speaker, swap ideas eat some good food of which DW would have approved, and raise a glass to Bob. How about the Hotel where they Filmed DRO all those years ago? If we could track down a copy of the film of the Forbidden Territory, or the Eunuch of Stamboul, we could screen the films. Ok it maybe a mad idea but if the alternative is to allow this BB to fizzle out and all of us to retreat back to our own dog eared copies of DW books with no contact with other enthusiasts, then maybe it's worth considering. Meanwhile lets have a few new postings please!!

Is it possible that not everyone has come back after the hiatus? I know there are some names I have not seen again. On the other hand, I'm on an Andre Norton forum that can go weeks without a posting as well. (Her death slowed that forum down drastically, though she never posted there herself.)

I was not able to contribute to the GIFFORD HILLARY thread because we didn't see the program in the States (someone did offer to burn it for me, but our DVD systems are not compatible), and I haven't read a DW novel since THE ISLAND WHERE TIME STANDS STILL almost a year ago.

Possibly, with the new Wordsworth reprints, more people will seek us out...

Garry/Nick,

I've been thinking exactly the same as you. So I told myself to get back to doing a few Book reviews.
I was on holiday last week and managed to read Contraband. I'll post it today.

It really is such a shame to let this quality site go to waste.

Stevie P.

:D Thanks for your replies! I'll try to come up with something soon. I think that we should perhaps use the off-subject thread as well. Even when it isn't directly connected to DW it's nice to see what everyone is up to!

Nick mentioned us all meeting at the hotel where they filmed Devil Rides Out. It's out of the question for me this year, but is anyone interested in something next year? I don't know what booking a party of us there would entail, but if anyone knows more about the place in question it might be nice if we could find out a few more details about the place. What does everyone else think?

Thik it's called something else now. It's about £100 a night for a double room. I did a google search and it has been taken over by a chain of hotels.

EDGWAREBURY HOTEL IN ELSTREE. The Edgwarebury Hotel on Barnet Lane, Elstree has just completed a £250000 improvement. programme as its owner Corus hotels ...

Type in Elstree and up it comes.

Here are the details. They seem used to dealing with private events, so the idea of a DW convention at this venue is not out of the question.

Full of character with its charming Tudor style exterior and traditional interior decor, Corus hotel Elstree stands within landscaped gardens, surrounded by 10 acres of natural woodland. The intimate and sophisticated public areas make the hotel ideal for private parties and celebration dinners. Corus hotel Elstree is approved for civil wedding ceremonies and is a popular meeting venue. With excellent access to M1, A1 and M25, central London is within easy reach.

Prices from £39 Bed and Breakfast per person per night -

The off-subject thread sadly doesn't seem to have taken off and it's a shame to waste it. I agree with everybody who says the forum is too good to go to waste. Was a mass PM sent out to advise the members that the board is back? It was off-line for quite a while so perhaps some people gave up looking and are still unaware that the Library has returned?

I only knew that it was back because I occasionally looked up the site to see if anything was happening. Maybe a mass e-mail could be sent to members, just to let them know that it is back.

Dear Garry

That's an excellent idea. I'll see what can be done. I did email everyone on the one email list I was able to track down, but when we were getting the Library back online, it didn't occur to me that there might be a separate list there. If we can find one, an email will go out.

Meanwhile, it's great that you, Jim, Steve and others are getting the Library side of the site moving again. My own efforts have of necessity been more on getting the 'main' side of the site operational, and next week hopefully you will see a new section on books by other members of DW's family go live, and in the next month or so something about Hutchinson ephemera, plus further additions to the photo archive of reprints etc.

On that score, I reckon the site must have one of the most comprehensive records of the publications of any author. If any of you have copies of DW books not logged on the site, please do let me have scans.

More anon .... meanwhile it's truly great to see The Library getting back into action.
Charles

Hi all,

I got a copy of the e-mail advising me the site was active again today and thought I'd pop in to say hi!
I hope this forum doesn't die either and hope to keeping coming back here for a laugh and some info/opinions on DW.

Thanks! Where is my old sparring partner Hoyo? Is he back as well?
How have you all been?
Read any DW books lately? Of course you have, but which ones?
I've read The Satanist, To the Devil a daughter and Strange Conflict. I also tried to read Three Inquisative people but stopped when the Duke told him they were going to a club where neither socialism or women have ever penetrated! Fair do's regards to the ladies but really us socialists aren't that bad.
I loved the Satanist but found to the Devil a Daughter hard going and very confusing. Strange Conflict was excellent, but the politics - good grief! Many times I thought, this book can't get any more offensive/rascist but it does!
