whilst Im on a roll.....The Shadow of Tyburn Tree

Though perhaps not quite as boys own, or as gripping as the first Rodger Brook novel, this is a worthy follow up. Mr Brook, having impressed Prime Minister Pitt with his daring and resoucefulness in France, accepts his offer of emplyment on the continent, and heads off towards Russia, via Scandanavi...

Ok, and The Launching of RB...

This is the first of the twelve part Rodger Brook historical series, which eventually charts the course of his career in espionage throughout the French Revolution, Napoleonic and Peninsular Wars, through to the Battle of Waterloo. It is not a rich in historical detail as many of the subsequent book...

My contribution to get things moving...Rising Storm

The third in the Rodger Brook series is perhaps slightly over-long and often too wrapped up in specific historical content compared with some of the others, however, it does have a fantastic ending, which would do any book justice. The year is 1789, and the storm clouds of revolution are gathering i...

Well, at the age of around 8 or 9 I was given a copy of The Forbidden Territory and told, "just read the first page, and see if you want to carry on.." I never looked back, and have since read twenty-odd of his novels. Mind you, its 16 years later, so I might be tempted to read the thing a...

Just thought Id ask what people's thoughts are on the first three volumes on his younger life (before he met Rex, Simon and Richard)?

Well I should confess that as of yet Ive only read the first 6 RB volumes, and Ive heard that both Evil in a Mask and the Irish Witch are excellent in their own right... but The Man Who Killed the King seems to have everything that DW held dear - an emotional rollercoaster of a ride, an excellent re...

I have to confess, I believe Gateway to Hell to be the worst of his books. It was written out of sequence (ie set before Dangerous Inheritance, but written afterwards), and his feelings towards the shifting trends within society and young people at the start of the 70's come across a little too forc...

I would nominate Man Who Killed the King, Strange Conflict and The Golden Spaniard, but from what others have told me, and from what Mr Wheatley said himself when asked this question, his best work by a mile was The Second Seal - it has everything you could possibly want in a novel
