I read this as a teenager in a dreary Southampton bedsit. I absolutely loved it- its vistas of romance and adventure really lifted the spirits.

Quarterly Review article on TDRO

I came across an article on the screen version of TDRO in an edition of the Quarterly Review. As someone who doesn’t know much about the making of the film, I found it very interesting. I was particularly intrigued to learn that the incantation used by De Richleau to banish the Angel of Death was ...

I’m up for the film being screened at the convention Darren. I watched the first ten minutes of it as a teenager (until I was called away to drink a Watneys Party 4 or something) and I’d be interested in seeing the rest of it.

That is a good cover. Very Caspar David Friedrich.

I absolutely love TTDAD too. As Richard points out, the juxtaposition of the sun dappled Riviera with the bleakness of the Essex marshes makes the novel a particularly well-executed one. The one thing that jars with me is Molly Fountain’s sociopathic sang-froid after having eviscerated the (reform...

Yes, welcome Richard. It's nice to read your posts and make your (virtual) acquaintance.

My first DW was Toby Jugg too. And To the Devil... has long been a favourite of mine.

I downloaded and read the essay on Sunday. Your review is spot on- there's hardly anything new there. And it's all rather clumsily written. If it had cost more than a couple of quid, I'd have considered it a waste of money.

I enjoyed the free preview anyway- a foreword from Christopher Lee. Who was as insightful and articulate as he always is.

Although it wouldn't appear in my top 5, TUDF has some cracking set pieces: The midnight skydive into enemy territory; the eerie desuetude of the Berlin bunker; the perilous confrontations with Grauber...and not a few others spring to mind.

It is interesting oldjiver. In fact, the whole series is very entertaining. And (hurrah) it's largely available on YouTube too:

Great British Ghosts

And thanks for pointing out the DW link- I've watched the relevant episode at least twice and never made the connection.

I've listed to the 'geeksyndicate' podcast- and can highly recommend it. The contributors are articulate and know their cultural history. Listening to them was a pleasantly intellectual experience.

I'll tune in to Necronom lot later in the week.

Again, thanks Darren for all your sleuthing.

The sad thing is Eric- I tried to see which books they were, but couldn't.

'Presbyopia' I think it's called. :(

It all sounds like a lot of work Cibator. I once worked in a bar and had to serve the occasional 'Black and Tan' (the Guinness and bitter blend)- and that was ordeal enough. One misaligned tilt of the glass when pouring and...a mess of froth and disappointment. The DW-patronised Rules Restaurant ser...

The Dennis Wheatley Crime Dossiers

There's an interesting article on the Wheatley/Links Crime Dossiers currently online. It has some great photos of and from the original texts- including one of the eponymous Robert Prentice and 'friend' being caught en déshabillé .

(As for Guinness, I thought it was a glass of mud with a head...) That made me laugh Jim. And, although I'm quite partial to the stuff myself, I'll be the first to concede it's an acquired taste. I'm wondering if anyone here's ever tried Black Velvet (the stout and champagne cocktail quaffed by man...
