DW and John Creasey Crime Classics Blogger Event

From Charles in the What's New section: Up in the present, you may be interested to know that Dominic Wheatley and I were guests at a Crime Classics blogger event held at the Groucho Club on Saturday last; part of a series of events designed to re-awaken interest in Dennis Wheatley and other classic...

FOR THE LOVE OF HORROR is another horror film podcast series that I recently discovered. In episode 6 (December 2015) they had a Dennis Wheatley double bill, discussing both TDRO and TTDAD. The review of TDRO is simply a summary of the film, BUT I did learn one interesting little gem. Gwen Ffrangcon...

Phil Baker "Dennis Wheatley" lecture in 2016

Hi folks, The illustrious DW biographer, Phil Baker, is giving a lecture on DW to the Dracula Society on 12th March 2016. I used to be a member of the Dracula Society when I lived in London in the early 90s, and they were great social evenings, usually in a private room in a central London pub, with...

Dartington Hall is definitely on my "to visit" list. It's history/mythology covers the age of Wheatley, a progressive school opening not long before DW started writing and closing due to a series of scandals only a few years after DW's death. There is really atmospheric footage on youtube:...

Dennis Wheatley Sequels

What titles come to mind?

I'll start with the obvious: The Devil Rides Back

Another obvious one is Black September - I'm sure DW would have an exciting plot with that one.

Any others?

A wasted opportunity. Everyone is in agreement. What a waste!! It is frustrating because it is well made, with good actors, a good set and atmosphere. The worry is that viewers may blame DW for the poor story. What a waste!!!! :smt093 A good thing to come out of it is that the music by Daniel Pember...

I thought it magical. It was (almost) like coming across the book for the first time. It is a very different experience. Nick Dow mentioned in his audiobook talk at the 2009 convention that you "always pick up something new every time". I really enjoyed listening to The Ka of Gifford Hila...

However, although thinking about what other genres he could have written in, I still wish he had written more Black Magic Stories. Duncan So do I - especially as they are so good. And whenever I mention DW to people, those that have heard of him usually refer to him as the "horror writer".

Shane - I didn't get on with Herbert's Crickley either - I threw the towel in halfway through. It's interesting how you refer to Jack Nicholson "hamming it up". For many of the scenes Nicholson (and the others) provided (in some instances) over 50 different performances, pushing their acti...

Stephen King's The Shining and James Herbert's The Ghosts of Sleath are two of my favourite ghost stories. I remember as a teenager gripping the books as I read them. Now you mention them I must check out Peter Straub and Shirley Jackson - they are two authors that all the modern great horror writer...

I have noticed that Unchartered Seas is the one book by DW that is quite well-known - and, indeed, actually been read - by readers/colleagues/friends whom are not Dennis Wheatley fans, and is not part of his Black Magic compendium. I wonder if it is because of the "Lost Continent" film - i...

It was a great weekend - they get better and better. I thought the mist was necessary to ensure we didn't get followed as we left the hotel and made our ways home.

I look forward to the recommendation, KLP85. See you next year.
