The 'gentleman criminal' character Oxford Kate, who features in the first half of the book, is reminiscent of one or more of Dornford Yates' villains. I recently re-read They Found Atlantis, and found it something of a novel of two halves; the criminals & rich idlers scenario of the first half, ...

Better To Marry- by Eve Chaucer

I've recently finished reading my second Eve Chaucer novel, Better To Marry-, and found it a very different experience from the light-hearted tale of No Ordinary Virgin. Better To Marry- starts normally enough as a romance played out both in rural England and in the more exotic setting of Dakar, Sen...

Right, you may have to dig deep to work out one or two of the references here, and maybe even deeper to raise a laugh, but.... You know you've read too many Roger Brook novels when; - You find yourself doing the crossword with a quill pen - You've figured out a French version of your name, but your ...

Dear Charles Many thanks for the details; I did search for the planning application on the Lambeth Council website earlier on, but missed it as I was looking for Clinton House rather than 1 Palace Road. I have now lodged my objection using the facility provided on the website as you suggested, rathe...

Well done Charles! This is a good example of a way (aside from the obvious) in which contributors to this website can take action to try to preserve the DW heritage. Whilst I don't suppose that our representations would carry anything like as much weight as those of local residents, I nevertheless ...

No objections from me Charles. Anything which might encourage people to discuss our 'hero' is fine with me. And if it attracts more people to the DW Tribute site and therefore into the Library, so much the better.

Does nobody else have an opinion on this?

Churchill's Bunker ("Oh no, not another one!")

"Oh no, not another one!" I hear you cry. But yes, 'tis true, another book which includes a few references to DW; another image for Dear Old Charles to add to the 'Books About' section. 'Churchill's Bunker' by Richard Holmes, in association with the Imperial War Museum (Profile Books, 2009...

A couple of months ago I was looking for an exciting adventure to read, so decided on a DW - my first for a few years - and selected The Fabulous Valley. It must have been twenty years since I first read it, and I remembered it indeed as 'Boys Own' stuff, as Stevie P said in the first post on this t...

Well, Jean and I can't make Sep 12, and are extremely doubtful for the ones either side of that, Sep 5 and Sep 19. In any event, as a Convention without Charles is in our opinion unthinkable, our votes at this stage go to Oct 3 and Oct 10, but if a later date should prove desirable, any time from No...

It's many years since I read The Black Baroness, but I find this fascinating. Whilst I've always enjoyed Wheatley's blend of fact and fiction, I've never been entirely sure where fact has ended and fiction begun. With DW's 'inside knowledge' of wartime affairs, the boundaries are likely to be somewh...

Jim, I don't know whether I'm more impressed by the fact of your finding two more Venetias, or by the fact that you've apparently read Heyer and Disraeli. I don't suppose those two authors are very similar in style to DW, or are they?

That's right - I thought it looked strange.

Oddly enough, there was an obituary of a Venetia in the Telegraph today - as a little girl she got to name the planet Pluto.

So that's three Venetias (plus possibly the woman in the blind shop).

No Ordinary Virgin by Eve Chaucer (Mrs Dennis Wheatley)

I've just finished reading No Ordinary Virgin, the first Eve Chaucer I've ventured to read. It's a rather unusual tale of a woman - Venetia - who has reached her late twenties with her honour intact, as it were, despite having been married (her husband died a few hours after the wedding). She declar...

Drat! (Can I say 'drat' in the Library?) Looks like we missed an interesting programme there Charles. Why didn't the someone ring you before it was shown? Guess they didn't realise DW was going to make an 'appearance'. If we could get hold of a recording, it might be a good item for inclusion on the...

Re: 'The Born Actor' - Venetia is also the name of the heroine of 'No Ordinary Virgin' by Eve Chaucer (Mrs. Dennis Wheatley). The only two occasions I can recall seeing the name, although I'm now going to check the staff badge of that Italian-looking woman who works in my local blind fittings shop. ...
