For me, it's

(1) The Devil Rides Out

(2) Strange Conflict

(3) They Used Dark Forces

(4) The Satanist

(5) Traitor's Gate

Note the strong bias towards Sallust and Le Duc here, and total absence of Roger B - this is NOT a coincidence!

Interestingly (?) enough, "The Devil Rides Out" is my favourite DW work, whereas "Strange Conflict" is the one I remember with the most affection, due to it being the first of his I ever read. and which hooked me for life on his stuff at the tender age of 13! "Gateway to Hel...

As a DW fan and a something of a radical, I feel Gloomy Sundae's pain! The funny thing is that though DW is somewhat ultra-conservative in "third person", his characters often display a liberalism and sympathy for the economic underdog quite unlike their creator. One rather bizarre solutio...

Thanks, I really appreciate the info - I was never to clear about the order books were written in DW's final years. I was really meaning to say "last novel" but being in the throes of preparing for an interstate trip at the time indulged in a bit of sloppy thinking. As it turns out, I was ...

Wayne, wasn't it his last book? Maybe that's why he never tried that genre again - regardless, I don't think he would have done, anyway. It just wasn't his style...

(errata): The title I quoted above sshould not have been "Valley of Fear' but "The Fabulous Valley". The valley might have been fabulous, but the book wasn't! As for "Man Who Missed the War" I rather liked it. It was probably the last of DW's occult novels I read, and was so...

Thoughts on DW's "Letter to Posterity"

I have just spent a (mostly) enjoyable hour watching the "Letter to Posterity" documentary. I must, once again, pass on my extreme gratitude to Mr Rothwell for making it available. What I particularly enjoyed was the fact that the program was not, as I had been left to believe, purely and ...

Agreed, an atrocious book! A distant second is "Linda Lee", with "valley of fear" third. Still, considering the general quaility of DW's work, three shockers isn't too bad!

Thanks Rob - I feel pretty humble actually, knowing how many far better writers than I don't ever get into print. But shhhh, don't tell my publishers I said that. As far as I know I'm the first to actually dedicate a work to ficticious characters - come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing a b...

Some rather immodest boasting I'm afraid...

I hope the other users of the library will forgive me a piece of shameless self-puffery here... But a few hours ago I received the advance copy of my latest novel for use in the Australian educatioinal system... A medieval mystery which I hope will keep my young readers on the edge of their seats as...

(I take the Scotch and soda brought to me by Wilkes, and raise it in a graceful gesture to Nick, as a fitting gesture to his eloquence. This man has TASTE!)

Wheatley and Goering

I have read "The Door Marked Summer", but some years ago and don't recall much about the part dealing with the Nazis and occultism - I do recall a fascinating passage about Bentine's medium parents calling up the spirit of a deceased Indian (as in East Indies, not a native American) who gr...

Favourite series

The Duc and his team, by miles! An honourable second is the Gregory Sallust series, particularly the stories taking place in WWII. I never really took to the Roger Brook stuff, even though I find fiction of that period interesting usually. I just think most of the stories lack that usual DW "sp...
