Page 399 – GS used an Italian oath which in the imagination of man has never been exceeded for is blasphemy. Any idea’s anybody??? Just had a re-read of this excellent review. My guess is the oath is porco Dio . Very infra dig. But it's in common enough usage for a foreigner like GS to have pic...

I love A Dance to the Music of Time. But, until I'd read the article, I'd never appreciated that DW was the model for one of the characters.

Thanks Darren

Come, come into the circle. We're all here: me, you...the Goat of Mendes!

Jaja, that was very enjoyable. Cheers Darren.

Tall, Dark and Gruesome? What a lovely title- arresting, modest and funny!

Sir Chris' appearance on the BBC's Desert Island Discs can be streamed on their iPlayer; although I'd imagine you'd need a UK IP address to access it.

He's an interesting bloke is Sir Christopher.

His Lord of Misrule is one of the most engaging autobiographies I've ever read.

That's an interesting link. Some of the stuff in her gallery isn't half bad. The architectural pieces put me in mind of Mervyn Peake's illustrations for Gormenghast.

The illustrations for the Heron To the Devil a Daughter are truly awful: Ugly, technically incompetent and daft.

Casting the Runes is my favourite M R James story. And has been since I first came across it in the Alfred Hitchcock: Stories they wouldn't let me do on TV anthology at the age of 13. It's stood up to umpteen re-readings. Thank you for the links Darren.

Thank you Charles. And a Merry Christmas to you, yours and all the other DW aficionados it's been my pleasure to have met here or at Elstree.

It's nice to be able to see the article in its original setting. It gives it a real sense of time and place- I particularly enjoyed the Reg'lar Fellers comic strip.

It's been a while since I've visited this site and although I'm being more than tardy with my comment, may I say that the unearthing of DW's limericks is a coup of coups. I, perfectly literally, laughed out loud. You've excelled yourself with this one Darren. Bravo!

Once again Darren, you've done amazing work digging up Wheatley arcana. His appearing on chat and panel shows just how much DW was part of the cultural ether a generation or two ago. I'm not old enough to have ever heard (or, at least, understood) the great man on the radio. But I do remember, quite...

Richard Matheson? Now there was one of the handful of horror writers who could actually do a good job.

I'm looking forward to listening to that Darren, thanks.

Interesting. It prompted me to see if the Hastings and St. Leonards Literary Society is still in existence. And it's not, well at least not by that name- there is however a Hastings Writers' Group. Anyway, Wheatley's remark about America being about the most godless country on earth is noteworthy- e...
