That does sound like a fun day (or days) out. I'd probably come along.

I love Europe too. I'd rather read Zola than Dickens and I'd be much happier grazing tapas and drinking Rioja in the Iberian peninsular than eating a scotch egg on the Edgware Road. However, coming to a decision about the referendum didn't present me with much of a dilemma: I voted 'Out', am happy I...

Thanks for the link Darren. An interesting broadcast- the inevitable bien pensant scoffing at DW notwithstanding.

This 'voice [of the people] was rarely raised; but when it was, rulers had good cause to tremble, and almost invariably, the result was a cessation of repression or a change of government; as the ‘voice’ was usually pregnant with both justice and commonsense.

But (if drinking Guinness is a gauge of accomplishment) my Walpurgis Night was very successful indeed, thanks Darren.

Ironic that it's so named in honour of a robustly Christian nun.

Yes, it was a very pleasant evening indeed. It certainly made a change from Netflix.

And, for those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure, I can't recommend Là-bas enough.

Amen to that Steve.

And let me add all my best wishes to the DW community as well.

Those events do look like a lot of fun. And, naturally enough, a talk on DW by PB sounds doubly appealing. I may well stump up the membership fees just to attend that.

I love the novel Dracula too. It's one of the few horror novels I've read that I didn't find crass and boring.

I've listened to Christopher Lee's TDRO. I thought it magical. It was (almost) like coming across the book for the first time.

I can't remember ever having read The Shining- Jack Nicholson hamming it up in the film must have put me off. But I did enjoy The Ghosts of Sleath...unlike Herbert's enervating Crickley Hall.

The accomplished DW might have met his match with a straight out, novel-length ghost story. Very, very few writers seem to have pulled it off with any success. Peter Straub, Shirley Jackson and Phil Rickman have done it, but I can't think of many more. And even with Straub's Ghost Story , the origin...

One was called Box Deluxe and I guess it got worked around into "dog's bollocks" from there. Of course, he very likely could have been making it up. I think the other part of that story was "Bog Standard" which came from the Standard Box. As dogs prize, nurture and cosset their ...

The more likely stereotypical British thing would be a reference to tea, rather than to coffee Eric. (Mind you, UK consumption of the former seems to have declined precipitously over the past few years.)

I always rather enjoyed DW's didactic side. And the 'info dumps' certainly saved a few trips to the library back in the pre-Internet era.
