They do indeed... When Jean and I went to look at it some years ago it didn't look much different to how it did in photos from 1914, although it seemed rather forlorn and appeared to be disused. My first thought is that it's sacrilage for the building to be used as anythin...

Welcome Dave.

As you may have seen, we'd been saying that we need more people participating in the Library.

Any chance you'll be interested in attending next year's Convention?

DW Makes the Front Page of the Times!

Well, all right, it's only Fortean Times, but he's still on the front page. The December issue of the journal of strange phenomena has dropped through my letter-box this morning, and virtually the whole of the front cover is devoted to Dennis Wheatley. There's a nice portrait with Arrow paperback-st...

I wonder what's become of Hoyo and Sir Pellinore, and others who used to contribute frequently - are you still out there?

Just in case anyone is interested, there's a review of Phil Baker's biography in the Culture supplement of today's Sunday Times.

Steve, further to Charles's advice, I would forget about this new feller Dan What's-his-name, and read Come Into My Parlour and the biography at the same time (not literally of course). I often have a novel and a biography on the go at the same time, and I select whichever one I fancy when I go to b...

Yes, my copy has arrived too - good old Royal Mail! I've just been dipping in rather than try to read the whole thing straight off; but not just dipping in here and there - I've been dipping in all over the place. And there's plenty of scope for that in six hundred pages. My first impression is that...

Yes, I received a similar e-mail to Ken's on Friday 9th, saying my copy had been despatched by Royal Mail.

It didn't arrive on Saturday, but then I didn't really expect it to. I have high hopes for Monday though!

Once it arrives I imagine I'll be reading it to the exclusion of all else.

Just picking up on Alan's thread regarding Dornford Yates; we do know that DW was a fan of Dornford - he listed Yates (in "Drink And Ink", I think) as one of the authors whose works he enjoyed reading. From memory, I believe the Blackwell's auction catalogue of DW's library contained one o...

I think the answer is that a lot of the autobiography just wasn't written. I have it on good authority (from Anthony Lejeune) that there was no need to discard anything; the problem was more in the nature of finding enough material to fill one volume. Like Stevie P, I too am disappointed that the 'w...

The Girl Who Wasn't Claudia by Eve Chaucer

I've just finished reading The Girl Who Wasn't Claudia , and what a splendid and entertaining tale it proved to be! The main settings of 1930's London and Budapest appealed to me from the start, and the book has a real Hungarian flavour throughout, whether our heroine is actually in that country, or...

Jim, I'll take your word for it; I think I've heard of Twilight , but I've certainly never seen it and know nothing about it. I remember The Twilight Zone , but think it was over-rated. I always preferred The Outer Limits , even if some of the plots were outrageous, and some of the aliens ridiculous...

I feel I should apologise even for bringing this up again, but recently seeing a number of DVDs of The Haunted Airman for sale on e-bay has reminded me just how awful this travesty of a production really was. I recall my excitement before the original broadcast, which I must have conveyed to my pare...

Ah Cibator, thanks for that. I've now started reading The Girl Who Wasn't Claudia (and very interesting it is too); maybe I'll pull out a copy of Traitor's Gate and have a look in there at the same time. By the way, if it's not too rude a question to ask, how do you pronounce your name? For some rea...

I agree Charles, it does look to be a lovely dustwrapper - unfortunately my copy doesn't have one. The Girl Who Wasn't Claudia is next on my list - it's the only other one I possess. As it seems to feature Hungary - and hopefully Budapest - I'm wondering if it will shed any light on that statue (you...
