I had not even known these three titles existed in hardcover (in this series). I *do* have the Dumas HORROR AT FONTENAY, which was issued in hardcover in the U.S., apparently a one-off. Actually, one of the first conversations Bob and I had was about these hardcovers. I think he updated the Occult ...

Library of the Occult Hardcovers on ebay Ending Today!

Hi guys. I wish I could have posted here more lately. It's still kind of sad for me. Bob and I had some nice chats over email and I still can't believe he's gone. But anyway. . . I wanted to let you guys know that I'm selling 3 hardcover Library of the Occult books in one auction. As you guys may kn...

I'm so glad to find this site back. I was avoiding looking here. Bob will be sorely missed. But he started something that will carry on. . .

Have you got all the intro's online? Not yet, but am in the middle of doing so. Will let you know when I've finished." Excellent! That is much appreciated. I've slowly been piecing my DW Library of the Occult together, but it isn't easy, especially living in the U.S. I'm sending that "Dra...

Then again, I might cheat and go for the DW Library Of The Occult edition of Dracula as I'm still trying to get over his introduction.
You've got me curious--what does his introduction say? I don't have that particular volume in the DWLotO yet.

I'm surprised Radio BBC 4 has never done any dramtizations of Wheatley's work. They are quite conducive to it.

Fascinating insight, thanks maisonvivante . I must get out and find myself a copy of The Ninth Gate . I was totally in ignorance about it being an adaptation of one of Dumas' titles, which in itself has interesting connections, as DW freely confessed that he based his de Richleau tales on Dumas' wo...

Polanski's "The Ninth Gate:" DW influenced?

I just watched Roman Polanksi's film from 1999 "The Ninth Gate," and was struck by how much of it seem Wheatley-esque. The idea of a Satanic mystery, the travel through Europe, the mysterious femme fatale who turns out to be a guardian angel of sorts--all seemed very much in the Wheatley t...

Greetings and welcome maisonvivante . We in the UK and our forefathers/mothers, who can never get enough of DW have never understood why DW never made it into the top-sellers on the other side of the pond. Perhaps you have always been a bit more sensitive as to the non-pc elements of his writing? I...

I doubt that was DW's design - more likely the restraining hand of his agent/publisher!
Interesting. But even still, I can't imagine him doing things without taste or being overtly crude and vulgar.

Bob, that's really too bad. I actually live outside of Los Angeles, and my partner works in the entertainment industry in Hollywood. He was (believe it or not!) casually working on a "Toby Jugg" script (very faithful to the novel) when we got the news that BBC had beaten us to the punch. W...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While I originally was drawn to Wheatley more for the occult/mystery aspects of his work, I've actually enjoyed his historical work as much or more. This novel had a similar feel to "The Prisoner in the Mask" and they both reminded me of Dumas. I found "...

Fascinating discussion, guys. I mentioned in my introduction that I wouldn't care for a little editing of Wheatley's novels to make them more PC (horror of horrors, but I'm a realist, I guess). That may sound blasphemous to some, I know, but it was done with Christie and has served her novels quite ...

I'm in the U.S., so I haven't seen this program, but it doesn't sound like I have missed much. I'm actually amazed. The book is so easily adaptable to a suspenseful supernatural thriller! I'm shocked they dropped the ball. I almost get the sense (from your reviews) that the BBC was sort of embarasse...

Greetings, everyone. I am a 30-ish male from the United States. I was introduced to Dennis Wheatley a couple of years ago when (on a whim) I purchased the entire Heron collection of his novels off of ebay. I am a voracious reader, and English literature is my particular favorite. Having worked my wa...
