The preface to the short story reveals DW considered it one of his best books, so we are in good company. Curiously, at least to me, he considered The Second Seal his best book (Drink & Ink, p252). Steve - I'll look forward to reading a review of TSS in due course !!! :D The Second Seal is cert...

A very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to all members of this splendid website. Many thanks to Charles, who has so ably taken up the torch which Bob Rothwell lit so brightly.

One year on, my thoughts and prayers are with Sue.

Requiescat in pace, Bob.

Steve - Personally, I'm quite keen on some of Dornford Yates's writing - "Blind Corner", for example, is an absolute classic - but I rather lose the will to live when ploughing though some of the "Berry" books. Probably fine in their day, but nowadays horrendously dated in a way ...

Re: Aleister Crowley

I did borrow a book written by Crowley to see what it was all about. I was ery disappointed as once you get beneath all the jargon & terms youÂ’re really just left with alchemy. Using the will to turn something into something else. Which is absurd. Crowley was just a con-man so it was good to r...

They are obviously completely bonkers, if you ask me.

I'm very taken with your idea of a Satanic plumber/electrician, though! :-D I've been quite lucky with the tradesmen I have employed, but one does hear some horror stories.....

It all depends on whether or not he went to bed during the period in question, and as he was writing 20,000 words I suspect he didn't. In that case, 5 magnums over 48 hours = 1 bottle every 4.8 hours, which is perfectly feasible; at that rate he would be on a permanent alcoholic "high" wit...

What a wonderful thought - a DW Black Magic Western!! :rofl (My slightly bizarre sense of humour is working overtime).

Re: Wheatley's darkest work

When I first read it, at a very young age, I assumed that it was the first written in the "Musketeers" series, and that as he later gained more affection for his characters he changed his style. Later I learned that though chronologically predating it, it was actually written AFTER "...

We're in agreement on this one, Toohey! Mind you, you are obviously thinking of the 60s/70s Arrows - some of the earlier (50s) ones were even worse (no nudes, though!).

I think the idea for a DW convention is an excellent one, and I would certainly make every effort to be there - count me in. Hope Toohey can make it, too - we'll end the evening either sharing a magnum or having a duel on the lawn!
