Hi
I’m researching the history of the Westminster Dragoons (we think my great uncle signed up for it), and I suddenly remembered that in DW’s autobiography, “Officer and Temporary Gent†he spends a night with the Westminster Dragoons, camped in field in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. This was on the eve of the outbreak of the First World War. Does anybody know where that camp was? If you drive into Goring, then cross over the river to Streatley, there is a fenced off field immediately on the right hand side, very close to a church and the Swan (the riverside hotel and pub), which DW mentions he visited with his friends. Amazingly, the field hasn’t, as yet, been developed on, even though it’s relatively in the centre of Goring & Streatley.
Does anybody know where the camp was? I’ve wondered if it was that very same field (still there, after many years), although of course, thec camp could easily have been somewhere else, outside the town.
Many thanks, Luke

Charles Many thanks for your reply- and the useful information. I'll get in touch with you directly about the Letter to Posterity website download: would be great news if you've still got it. I've now seen the auction catalogue on the site- will definitely keep my eye's open for another one of these...

Highcliffe Castle. I think it was built in the 1830's, (after the date of the Roger Brook novels) but I have a hunch it may have been built on the site of an earlier Highcliffe Manor. Either that, or DW was talking about a completely different place. But Highcliffe Castle is the famous one. Rambling...

Video Clips, DW's antique collection & Serpentine Wall
I've just realised that I've just rather stupidly left a reply on an old Bob Rothwell post about Pathe News, not realising that Bob had posted it a few years back. What I meant to say was: The Pathe news clips are great. I've mentioned this one before, but there's no harm in having another go: on a ...

DW film & video clips
The Pathe news clips are great. On a similar theme, did anyone manage to download the video clip from the BBC4 Letter to Posterity website : "On other authors of the time and his passion for collecting". It's now been deleted by the BBC. I was hoping that someone might have saved it? It wa...

Scarcity of of "Haunting of Toby Jugg"?
I've just bought a 1950's reprint of "Toby Jugg' on ebay, in a reasonable condition with dustjacket. I'm sure others will have noticed the apparent scarcity of this title- especially as a first edition. My question is why? I would have thought that the print-run on the post-war titles would hav...

I would be very interested to find out from which film these BBC4 clips were originally taken from? Wouldn't the copyright remain with the original film company? I think there are Pathe News (or is it Gaumont?) clips currently available on the web. Another idea worth mentioning: In the recent biogra...

Alas, it looks like the BBC have taken a conscious decision to remove these video links. I've noticed that video links to other BBC 4 programmes have been removed as well. Which is annoying, as there was an especially interesting video of DW at Grove talking about his Modern First Edition book colle...

Broken Links on BBC4 Letter to Posterity Webpage
Further to my last post, I've just reported the "broken links" to the BBC through their technical fault page. It would be good to get these video links up and running again. I'm not sure if it's a technical fault or if the BBC have decided to delete them. One of them includes very interest...

Links to DW videos on BBC4 webpage down?
I've just tried to log on to these (Letter to Posterity webpage on BBC4 site) but they don't seem to be working. Anyone know if the BBC have deleted them? The two radio interview links are working, but the two DW video links appear to be broken. A pity. I wonder if they are available anywhere else? ...

DW the cavalier? I think DW had a great love for Ancient Rome (Gordon Eric Gordon Tombe influenced him in his reading of ancient civiilistations), and Dennis held up the Roman love for luxury, fine wines, epicurean decadence, and good looking women as some sort of an ideal to live up to. Anyone with...
