Other than the Amicus portmanteaus, I think most 70s British horror films are rubbish. THEATRE OF BLOOD (1973) is one of the best Brit horror movies ever, and there are a number of others such as DEATHLINE. VAMPIRE CIRCUS, CAPTAIN KRONOS, the two PHIBES films that are enjoyable. One of the problems...

The magazine MASTER DETECTIVE (March 2014) has an article about the Gordon-Tombe case. It's accurate as far as it goes, although G-T comes across as a complete innocent, and there is no mention of DW, of course!

The DVD and Blu-Ray are pretty much the same, although the picture quality is enormously improved. I'm afraid that I'm sort of turning into a Blu-Ray snob! Rex's silly running style reminds me of a rather cringeworthy experience that I had some years back when I appeared on local radio. I was being ...

Well, we recently went the Blu-ray route and can you guess what my wonderful wife got me for a present? TDRO looks wonderful in the new format. It seems that they went back to the original negative, with the result that the picture absolutely glows. They haven't removed the film grain, so the slight...

The Oyster is a form of electronic ticketing that allows you to travel on the underground, buses, railways, trams and some boat services. Somewhere like London it's simple necessity to take public transport, especially if you're commuting regularly. There are the same numbers of smelly, weird and an...

I was reminded how much I love the smell of old books. Same goes for old record sleeves. Anybody else? Or is this just me? Come on, don't tell me none of you has every just deeply inhaled the scent of an old book or record sleeve. . . it's not that weird, is it? Apparently, the smell of old books i...

I was chatting to a book seller in Robin Hood's Bay and he said Dennis Wheatley fans were getting rarer. He could have DW books in stock for a long time with no interest and then suddenly a DW fan will turn up and buy the lot! This does touch on stuff that we've discussed on this forum before. Thos...

All of the copies of Wheatley that I have are completely impersonal, apart from one of the Lymington hardback editions where on the 'also available' page someone had ticked in pencil all of those books that they had read. Did they ever get to the end, I wonder. My non-Wheatley books, on the other ha...

I recall reading DW's opinion of drinking champagne, which was something along the lines of 'If you don't mix your drinks, and drink nothing but champagne all night, you won't actually get drunk'. I know that he was in the wine trade, but I do wonder how accurate this is. I didn't drink a drop this ...

I hate to break it to you, but the giant, fire breathing vampire bats have emerged from the core of the Earth and destroyed the rest of civilisation, so I'm afraid that it's just you and the rest of NZ left to begin the human race again... I suspect that given a few days to collect themselves, fans ...

You'd have Clint Eastwood as the Duc "I know what you're thinking, Mocata....did he use six spells or only five?" Actually, at a pinch, I'd accept him in the role. At least he has some presence. My real fear would be having someone like Adam Sandler playing Duke Richloo in a wacky comedy ...

That reminds me of the film MEMENTO, where the story is told back to front in 15 minute segments. I loved it, but it's the only film I remember where, half way through the DVD, the wife and I pressed the 'pause' button and tried to work out exactly what was going on! Wheatley seems to be one of thos...

I suspect that 'tummy' is slightly more commonplace here than the USA. There's a plastic surgery procedure known here as a 'tummy tuck'. It's rather like the description 'poorly' to describe someone's medical condition--such as "Dave is currently in hospital after being shot in the tummy. His c...

Euphemisms can be absolutely beautiful. Two Austalian descriptions of vomiting have been taken up over here and I love them. The first is 'to Chunder' the second is 'to do the Technicolour yawn'. Words for the lavatory seem to expand exponentially, with stuff like Khazi, Loo, Netty, Jerry, Dunny and...

This has nothing to do with the rest of this post, but I was reading some of the previous posts on this thread and it just reminded me of how British slang is way more fun than American slang. I don't know why, although it may be because it isn't commonplace for me (even though I have been exposed ...
