Re: How about this for Cardinals Folly?

Just for completeness, I was talking to the excellent Keith Radcliffe over the weekend, and he observes that there is an octagonal tower right in the middle of Kidderminster next to the fire station! Coincidence? Possible connection? See: https://meandmycastles.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/february-cald...

DW's Birthday

Just to mention that DW's was born on 8th January 1897, so today is the 125th anniversary of his birthday.

At least one of our number apart from me has already celebrated !

Best wishes !

Re: Books not (?) from DW's Library

In one case I took a gamble and it didn't pay off. I saw a copy of Thornton Wilder's 'The Bridge of San Louis Rey' described as bearing DW's bookplate come up for auction in one of London's most famous auction houses, and bought it on spec; I was abroad at the time and so I couldn't inspect it. I wa...

Re: The 2018 Convention

Dear All, Rather later in the year than usual because of a change in management at The Laura Ashley The Manor Hotel in Elstree, I now have firm prices for the Convention and am accepting bookings. This year's booking arrangements are going to be rather different to previous years because - in confid...

Re: The Old Man Said - the find of the century!!!

And then Charles makes a casual reference during one of his regular updates You know me, how else would I annnounce it ? :D Yes, it was as exciting for me as you can imagine, and you can rest assured that it was both volumes of 'The Old Man Said' that were in the boxfiles, as well as the annotated ...

Re: DW Bronze Star

Thanks Darren, Always good to know people read and appreciate the updates. I know you love the Museum as much as I do and I was really pleased to find that letter. Not that I didn’t believe DW had been awarded the Bronze Star but more that it proved it. I too wonder where the Bronze Star is. It may ...

Re: Chistopher Lee's copy of TDRO up for auction

If any of you are feeling rich, you can now buy Christopher Lee’s copy of ‘The Devil Rides Out’ for 1/3 off - Henry Southerans have recently, according to the internet, reduced the price down to £20,000.

If any of you buy it, do please show it to me !

Best as always !

Churchill - Darkest Hour

I forgot to mention that - far later than I should have - I took my family to see the above last weekend. What a performance by Gary Oldman, and what a riveting telling of the story. It was wonderful to think that as the action began Joan Wheatley was at the same time telling Capt. Hubert Stringer t...

Anthony Lejeune

Thanks to Steve Whatley for pointing out to me that one of Dennis Wheatley's close friends, the journalist and author Anthony Lejeune, died on 3rd March, aged 89. His obituary was published in The Daily Telegraph on 8th March. For many years Lejeune wrote an excellent column in the Sunday Telegraph ...

Re: The 2018 London Field Trip

Dear All, With many thanks to my very capable and hard working co-organisers, the lunch at Rules in one of their private dining rooms (Rule is where DW used to get the 'bigwigs' drunk in WWII), the visit to Churchill's War Rooms and the evening champagne reception in a Library off Carlton House Terr...

Books not (?) from DW's Library

Dear All, As dedicated collectors we all see from time to time books apparently signed by DW where the signature looks decidedly 'dodgy' ... but fortunately we don't see too many of these because (a) DW is still quite a niche market, and (b) prices still tend to be, at least for most items, relative...

Re: The 2018 London Field Trip

Dear All, As some of you will have learned by email, we have tentatively set a date for the Field Trip - Saturday 5th May. We are intending to include at a minimum a visit to Simon Aron's house in 'The Devil Rides Out' and a trip to the Cabinet War Rooms (where DW served in WW2), and we are hoping t...
