I have just noticed that the RED LION HOTEL Colchester that is featured in "To The Devil a Daughter" is the subject of "Great British Ghost Stories" on Sky channel 166 DRAMA on Sunday 1st June at 1.30am. Could be interesting.

"The Devil Rides Out" starring John wayne [-X I can almost hear the sound of gin and tonic glasses being dropped in horror and elderly gentlemen going red in the face. The only possible alternative to Sir Christopher Lee would have been the wonderful Peter Cushing.

The great thing about Shingle Street is the way it changes with the weather. On the day I took the pictures it was warm and calm. Near the cottages someone had planted a garden that has gone wild. There were Wallflowers struggling through the grass and shingle, and the glorious smell was wafting in ...

Hi ericmocata, yes we do talk funny, but at least we dont walk like John Wayne :rofl I haven't been to America but we have all seen the spectacular scenery from the movies, you live in a beautiful country. Here the scenery is on a smaller scale, but dripping in history and mystique. The "Ale&qu...

Stevie P , thanks very much for this. Your reviews get better each time and the information snippets are invaluable. Be careful, though, we might start preferring your reviews to the real thing! Re London Bridge : By the end of the 18th century, it was apparent that the old London Bridge ? by now o...

Thanks for your kind words Charles. A field trip would, I am sure, be a very interesting day. I think that Shingle Street( Black August) and Hamford Water could be combined in a rather full day. There is more detail in TTDAD sites, but Shingle street in infinitely more beautiful. As I am not really ...

As Julian Day was written in 1939, I doubt he got the story from my uncle! It's just that as DW was involved in most deception I think he could have been behind this one. Why Stafford Cripps needed to be seen out of the country I have no idea? When I post pictures you will see the resemblance. Also ...

I was Stafford Cripps double!! A DW deception??

I have read of DW's wartime deception work, but have only recently read of his involvement in the "I was Monty's Double" deception. I have a similar story in my family concerning a rather less professional deception starring my "Uncle Jim". Sergeant Major James Welch was my mothe...
