In the spirit of the entertainment industry’s current fondness for modish identity politics ( vide Ghostbusters 3, the Mad Max remake etc.), may I suggest Whoopi Goldberg as the Duchesse and Graham Norton as Rex? And Chuck Norris as Mark-Lou and Lucy Liu as Richardette. I think I am liking this :^)

Curiously enough I too am readin this more or less ten years after the original. Since then i am forced to say I must revise my opinion of the DRO movie. I managed to find a copy on Youtube, and though it had (like most movies) a lot of deviations from the original script, I found it very enjoyable....

And in a sense, new DW readers will have it better than those who read him in his prime... they will get to read the novels in proper chronological order, and follow the Duke as a young man desperately in love to a man who dies in heroic circumstances. Or Gregory Sallust from a dissolute adventurer ...

Cibator wrote:I get the allusion, Darren. As for Yorkshire independence, I reckon a vote on that would be another Close result, although The Broad Acres should be able to Cope whatever the outcome. (But aren't all these jokes geting a bit Old?) :-D

Didn't watch this myself but have read the book by Neville Spring, that it was based on,which I thoroughly enjoyed. Happy New Year to all Duncan I read it too. Thought it was a really great read. I especially like his refutation of the "eye for an eye" philosophy. Really hope the show mak...

Is it just my imagination, or does the Duke (presumably the one without the knife) look something like a young Dennis Wheatley???

What a magnificent, insightful and informative review. A magnificent piece of work, and I think DW would have been delighted to read it.

Or even "Julian Day finally comes out on top," or "Conky and Molly's Wedding!" Seriously, though, if I ever did get permission to do just one novel or series, I think I'd pick up on the modern musketeers, maybe picking up after "Strange Conflict" or setting a work just ...

Writing a novel, or adaptation from another writer's canon is always fraught with difficulties, both legal and artistic. The legal side is somewhat of a grey area, as the on-line publication of so much fan fic in recent years has demonstrated. Technically, using characters protected by copyright is ...

"Why are we still discussing this?" I guess because bad news is still news. being able to commiserate with other DW fans is as comforting, in its way, as being able to enthuse over a brilliant adaptation like "The Devil Rides Out" or even a great DW novel. In fact, I think I'll t...

I'm not quite sure it was as simple as that. A problem that faces any author is coming up with new plots. I an well imagine DW with a towel wrapped around his head thinking "What am I going to put Roger (or Gregory) through now?" and, naturally, as a writer of black magic stories, an occul...

Have just (belatedly) watched this movie in its entirety. What a wasted opportunity - it could have been a cracker of a movie. Instead, all I can do is echo what Hart Reaver says in the first post in this thread. So sad!

Other possible genres...

From time to time I am wont to post speculative ideas up here as talking points... and here's another that occurred to me. In his lifetime, DW proved he could write in many genres - what today would be called "occult fantasy," espionage, straight out adventure, crime, historical novels, an...

Well, I for one look forward to seeing it. Since (obviously) we'll get no more "Modern Musketeer" black magic books, this will be very much a consolation. And I personally feel it's very much on topic for a black magic tale obviously influenced by DW to be discussed here in the library. I...

Richard, any chance of seeing this work, or are you one of those authors that like to keep it all under wraps until it is finished? Very happy indeed to share it, Alan, but as it's nearly finished (as in, 42 out of 50 chapters done, or c. 140,000 out of c. 180,000 words) I'll keep it under wraps fo...
